The maritime industry—a vital cornerstone of South Africa’s economy—took center stage at the Inaugural Shipping Gala held last week. Hosted by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers South Africa and the eThekwini Maritime Cluster, this prestigious event brought together stakeholders from across the maritime value chain to celebrate achievements, foster connections, and share insights into the future of the industry.
As YoungShip South Africa, we were honoured to have a seat at the table—literally and figuratively. Our YoungShip table played host to remarkable individuals who are making waves in the industry:
- Ms. Noxolo Ncayo and Ms. Matlohodi Senyatsi from the Ports Regulator of South Africa, who shared valuable perspectives on port operations and regulatory frameworks.
- Ms. Tanya Smith from CMA CGM, whose expertise in global shipping added depth to our discussions.
- Mr. Wesley Reddy, a rising maritime professional from KZN Leisure Boats , representing the next generation of innovation and leadership in the sector.

.
A standout moment from the gala was the induction of Captain Salvatore Sarno and Mr. Prasheen Maharaj into the Hall of Fame, recognizing their significant contributions to the South African maritime industry and their efforts toward reducing unemployment. Their hard work and dedication serve as an inspiration to us all.
The evening also featured a heartfelt gesture of giving back. A donation of R50,000 was handed over by Mrs. Zenzile Gwamanda and Mr. Durand Naidoo F.I.C.S to the General Commissioner of Police in KZN, Mr. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. This generous contribution will support the educational needs of children whose parents died in the line of duty.
The gala’s success would not have been possible without the support of its sponsors, including Sandock Austral Shipyards, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, Linsen Nambi, AMSOL – African Marine Solutions Group, Intertek, Sturrock Grindrod Maritime, Bidvest Tank Terminals, FFS Refiners, Dormac Marine Engineering, STE Scaffolding Associates Ltd, and media sponsors Shipping and Freight Resource, IBIA, and Unlocking Oceans Economy. Their contributions underscore the importance of investing in the growth and sustainability of the maritime sector.

As we reflect on this incredible event, we are grateful for the opportunity to see so many key stakeholders in one room and to engage in meaningful conversations about the future. We look forward to more opportunities to unite stakeholders, share ideas, and continue building a thriving maritime ecosystem in South Africa.
