We are happy to announce the call for applications for the YoungShip International IMO Working Group. Please find below information about available positions and the defined duties.

About the Job

You will join a program which is focussed on obtaining consultative status in the IMO.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and prevent marine pollution from ships. The IMO sets standards for the safety and security of international shipping.

Important Information Before You Apply

  • Regular meetings will be scheduled (approximately 2 hours per month) for the position, so you will need to adjust your schedule accordingly.
  • If you accept the position, you'll be committing to a 12-month term that begins in July 2023 and ends in July 2024.
  • This is an unpaid volunteer role that offers valuable experience. To be considered, you must commit to at least 1 hour per week.

Available Positions and Duties

1.Sponsorship Coordinator

What would be expected of me in the role of a sponsorship coordinator?

As a sponsorship coordinator, your role would involve developing and implementing sponsorship strategies to meet the goals of YoungShip International IMO Working Group. This would include identifying potential sponsors and partners, reaching out to them, and negotiating sponsorship agreements and contracts. You would be responsible for managing relationships with sponsors and partners, ensuring their continued support. In addition to this, you would be responsible for developing sponsorship databases and records, preparing and distributing sponsorship reports to stakeholders, and tracking sponsorship revenue and expenses. You would work closely with YoungShip IMO Working Group Event Coordinator to integrate sponsor activities into events, plan and execute sponsor events. Ultimately, your role would be critical in promoting sponsorships and increasing visibility for sponsors, while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.

Initially, only one individual will be hired for the position, but after three months, the coordinator may decide to recruit an additional person if necessary.

What are the key responsibilities of the sponsorship coordinator position?

  • Develop and implement sponsorship strategies to meet organizational goals.
  • Develop sponsorship proposals and packages.
  • Identify potential sponsors and partners and reach out to them.
  • Negotiate sponsorship agreements and contracts.
  • Develop and maintain sponsorship databases and records.
  • Work with Event Coordinator to integrate sponsor activities into events.
  • Track and report on sponsorship revenue and expenses.

 

2.Social Media Ambassador

What would be expected of me in the role of a social media ambassador?

As a social media ambassador, you would be responsible for promoting YoungShip International IMO Working Group through various social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram etc). Your primary role would be to build a positive image for the organisation. Some of the tasks that you may be expected to perform include creating and sharing social media posts, responding to comments and messages. Overall, your role as a social media ambassador would be to act as a brand advocate and help to increase awareness, engagement, and support for the organization.

Initially, only one individual will be hired for the position, but after three months, the coordinator may decide to recruit an additional person if necessary.

What are the key responsibilities of the social media ambassador?

  • Keep up with social media trends and best practices, and be able to adapt strategies.
  • Post YoungShip International IMO Working Group activities (webinar, podcasts, conferences, events etc.) on YoungShip International’s social media (LinkedIn, Instagram etc).
  • Set up an YoungShip International IMO communication plan.
  • Keep up to date the YoungShip International website.
  • Assist in editing YoungShip International IMO Working Group Newsletter.

 

3.MASS (Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships) Committee Member

What would be expected of me in the role of a MASS Committee Member?

It is said that Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) will reduce the probability of navigational errors at sea by a substantial measure. However, it is also true that inequitable distribution and the use of MASS would lead to problems. As young members of the shipping industry, we are concerned that our globalised world should remain empathetic to the concerns of the countries far removed from new technological developments like MASS. To this extent, we intend to work with global organisations, innovation clusters, and commercial organisations to ensure that through our young member base we act as bridges in the knowledge, information, and usage gaps. Being in this Committee will provide you (1) visibility and networking activities with a global team and membership base, (2) chance to enhance your knowledge of MASS activities, (3) institutional affiliation to gain sponsorships, and (4) institutional affiliation to grow professionally.

What are the key responsibilities of the MASS Committee Members?

  • Prepare policy papers to be published.
  • Set up events agenda and organise and attend MASS related events.
  • Join monthly IMO Working Group meetings.
  • Prepare monthly reports regarding Committee works.

 

4.General Secretary

What would be expected of me in the role of a General Secretary?

In the role of General Secretary of the IMO Working Group, your primary responsibilities will include scheduling meetings for the group, acting as a liaison between YoungShip International and the IMO Working Group, and ensuring the meetings run efficiently. Additionally, it will be your responsibility to prepare and distribute the minutes of each meeting to the members after its conclusion.

Only one individual will be hired for the position.

What are the key responsibilities of the general secretary?

  • Manage meetings with YoungShip International IMO Working Group
  • Create and share team links for virtual meetings.
  • Summarize meeting and distribute meeting minutes.
  • Coordinate and facilitate communication among team members.

 

5.  Youth Development Committee Member

What would be expected of me in the role of a Youth Development Committee Member?

In the role of the Youth Development Committee Member, it is expected from the member publish papers related to the youth development, engage with IMO members, prepare youth development related events, and support the IMO Mentorship Program.

Are multiple individuals being hired for the position?

Initially, only one individual will be hired for the position, but after three months, the coordinator may decide to recruit an additional person if necessary.

What are the key responsibilities of the committee member?

  • Collaborate with committee members to plan, coordinate, and execute youth development events.
  • Contribute innovative ideas to create engaging and impactful programs for young individuals.
  • Assist in identifying potential partners, sponsors, and speakers for events.
  • Attend committee meetings regularly and actively participate in discussions.
  • Represent the organization at external events, conferences, and workshops related to youth development.
  • Prepare policy papers to be published.
  • Support mentorship program.

 

6. Green Shipping Committee Member

What would be expected of me in the role of a Green Shipping Committee Member?

The Green Shipping Working Group, a committee within YoungShip – IMO Working Group, is specifically dedicated to enhancing the safety and security of international shipping through environmentally conscious practices.

Are multiple individuals being hired for the position?

Yes. Two people will be hired for the position.

What are the key responsibilities of the committee member?

    • Actively contribute to discussions and initiatives within the Green Shipping Working Group.
    • Collaborate with fellow committee members to develop and execute projects and initiatives.
    • Engage in research and stay updated on developments related to green shipping practices.
    • Support the organization of events, courses, workshops, and webinars.
    • Represent YoungShip and the Green Shipping Working Group in relevant industry events and activities.
    • Contribute to the promotion of diversity, inclusion, and gender equality within the maritime sector.
    • Provide input and feedback on relevant IMO topics through surveys and discussions.

 

7.Lobbying Committee Member 

The aim of the Lobbying Group is to spread the word of the IMO Working Group among IMO representatives and functionaries, as well as the different national authorities.

What would be expected of me in the role of Lobbying Group Member?

As a member of the Lobbying group, your role would be approaching IMO representatives and other related entities, in order to present and explain the aim of our IMO Working Group and the works we have been doing so far. You will also attend IMO related meetings, events, in a national and international context. Drafting of IMO meeting summaries and newsletters regarding attendance to IMO related events will also be required.

Yes. Two people will be hired for the position.

What are the key responsibilities of the sponsorship coordinator position?

  • Develop and implement lobbying strategies to meet organizational goals.
  • Attend IMO meetings and IMO related events.
  • Prepare summaries of IMO meetings to publish in social media.
  • Schedule meetings to present the IMO project to IMO representatives as per the IMO Working Group Agenda.
  • Collaborate with the Social Media Committee providing valuable content to publish regarding IMO meetings and activities.
  • Attend committee meetings regularly and actively participate in discussion.

Stage 1: The deadline for the applications is July 14, 2023. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

Stage 2: Applicants are required to specify the position they are applying for, attach their CV and a one-page motivation letter explaining how they plan to contribute to the position and why they are the ideal candidate. Stage 3: All applicants will be notified of the outcome by July 17, 2023. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in the first YoungShip International IMO Working Group meeting on July 18, 2023, at 17:30 C.E.T., and commit to the position.

YoungShip International Green Shipping Working Group

YoungShip International Green Shipping Working Group, represented by Ms. Belinda Dura and Mr. Akarsh Gupta, attending “Sailing in a new Geo-economics Era” on the 11th January 2023 in Athens, Greece. Furthermore, the representatives will also join a webinar by Bimco: Explaining the CII Operations Clause, on the 19 January 2023.

Through these events YoungShip aims to gain knowledge on the topics current being discussed at the international level between the experts in the shipping industry and share the feedbacks with its members. We feel the importance of the grasping an understanding on such topics to derive a collective opinion of the young professionals through an opinionated discussion amongst our 36 chapters spread around the globe. Furthermore, YoungShip believes in networking and raising awareness of such events/topics which would be viable for the developments of young maritime professionals.
