YoungShip South Africa Attends Inaugural Global Leadership Summit in Sri Lanka
YoungShip South Africa proudly participated in the inaugural YoungShip Global Leadership Summit (YGLS), held from November 16–19, 2024, in Colombo and Galle, Sri Lanka. Hosted by YoungShip Sri Lanka, this landmark event brought together young maritime professionals, innovators, and leaders from across the globe to network, collaborate, and discuss the future of the maritime industry. Representing South Africa, Nonqaba Bengu, Chairperson of YoungShip South Africa, joined the summit as the country nears the final stages of launching its local chapter.

The summit focused on critical themes shaping the maritime industry, including:

Through interactive workshops, panel discussions, and keynote speeches, participants explored innovation, sustainability, and the skills needed to address future challenges in the sector.
Nonqaba Bengu also had the honour of joining the WISTA Sri Lanka Breakfast Panel, led by Vice President Chamila Bandara, to discuss “Inclusivity and Diversity in the Maritime Industry.” Nonqaba shared insights into South Africa’s legislative efforts to promote gender equality and spoke about her experiences as a young female entrepreneur in the maritime sector.

During the summit, Nonqaba Bengu presented the progress of YoungShip South Africa, showcasing the work of its committee members, including Lucky Njabulo Sithole, Zinia Bunyula, and Yamkela Nhleko, in building a solid foundation for the chapter.
In addition to professional engagements, attendees experienced Sri Lanka’s rich culture and heritage, from exploring the vibrant streets of Colombo to the historical charm of Galle.

A highlight of the summit was the inspiring leadership seminar by Vidusha Nathavitharana, which focused on the values of love, responsibility, and sacrifice in leadership.
